Cooper Test
Recruit applicants must successfully complete the Cooper’s Test, a timed physical assessment that evaluates the physical fitness required to perform the essential job functions of a deputy. Click here to view the minimum requirements.
Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT)
The Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT) is required by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) for entry into the Law Enforcement and Corrections academies.
Applicants must register, pay for, take, and pass the CJBAT prior to hire.
The exam may be taken up to 3 times within a 12-month period. Passing scores may be used if:
- Taken within the past 4 years
- In the same discipline (Law Enforcement or Corrections)
There are two versions of the CJBAT:
- Law Enforcement
- Corrections
Applicants must take the version that matches the position they applied for.
Applicants for Law Enforcement positions may be exempt from the CJBAT if they:
- Are a qualified veteran, or
- Hold an Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university

Post-Secondary Education Readiness Test (PERT / CPT)
The Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT), also known as the CPT, is required for Law Enforcement Recruit and Detention and Corrections Recruit applicants who do not have qualifying college coursework.
Applicants must complete the PERT with passing scores unless they have previously earned college credit from an accredited institution (including College Composition I or equivalent).
You are not required to take the PERT if you have:
- Completed College Composition I, and
- Earned additional college-level coursework from an accredited institution
Minimum Passing Scores
Law Enforcement:
- Reading: 106–150
- Writing: 103–150
- Math: 114–122
Corrections:
- Reading: 106–150
- Writing: 103–150

Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
All certified deputy applicants must successfully complete the PAT, a timed physical assessment that evaluates the ability to perform critical job-related tasks required of Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office deputies. View the full PAT requirements here.
Equivalency of Training (EOT)
For out of state certified applicants, the Equivalency of Training (EOT) allows eligible individuals to be exempt from completing Florida’s full basic recruit academy.
This includes:
- Out-of-state law enforcement officers
- Federal law enforcement officers
- Military special operations personnel (in qualifying roles)
- Previously certified Florida law enforcement officers

What to Expect
The interview process is designed to evaluate your
communication skills, judgment, professionalism, and overall fit for the
position. You will participate in a structured oral board panel with agency
personnel and facilitated by a Human Resources representative.
Questions typically focus on:
- Work
history and life experience
- Decision-making
and problem-solving
- Integrity
and ethical judgment
- Teamwork
and conflict resolution
- Motivation
for pursuing law enforcement or public service
There are no trick questions. The goal is to understand how your background and thinking align with the role.
How to Prepare
Strong candidates are prepared, honest, and able to clearly explain their experiences. Prepare by:
- Reviewing
the position and its responsibilities
- Being
ready to discuss your background and experience
- Thinking
of examples showing teamwork, accountability, leadership, or
problem-solving
- Practicing
clear, organized responses
- Answering honestly—do not guess if unsure
Professional Presentation
First impressions matter.

- Turn
off or silence all electronic devices
During the Interview

As part of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office background investigation process, applicants are required to submit documentation to verify identity, education, and overall eligibility for employment. Please review the checklist below and ensure all required documents are submitted in a timely manner. Incomplete or delayed submissions may slow the background investigation process.

- Birth Certificate (If born outside the U.S., submit a Naturalization Certificate or valid U.S. Passport)
- Social Security Card (signed)
- Valid Driver License
- Name Change Documents (if applicable)
- DD-214 (if applicable)
Educational Records
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate (If obtained outside the U.S., an official equivalency evaluation from a recognized credential evaluation agency is required)

Important Reminders

Veteran's Preference
Veterans' preference is granted in accordance with Florida Statutes Chapter 295. Applicants must be honorably discharged and meet one of the eligibility categories below:
- A veteran who served during a wartime period or received a campaign/expeditionary medal
- A disabled veteran with a service-connected disability rated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
- The spouse of a veteran who is unable to work due to a service-connected disability, or who is missing in action, captured, or detained in the line of duty
- The unremarried spouse of a veteran who died from a service-connected disability
- The parent, legal guardian, or unremarried spouse of a service member who died in combat-related service

Education & Housing Benefits (GI Bill)
Veterans applying for sworn positions may be eligible to use federal education benefits, such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, during academy training. These benefits are administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and may provide a monthly housing allowance depending on eligibility.
