Colonel Joe Gerretz

Colonel Joseph Gerretz joined the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office as a detention deputy in 1993 and serves as commander of the Department of Detention and Corrections. The Department of Detention and Corrections is the largest department, overseeing approximately 1,100 sheriff's office employees and an average daily population of 3,000 inmates.

During his tenure with the sheriff’s office he has served in Field Training, in Traffic and DUI units, and as a detective in Burglary and Pawn. He has been a sergeant in the Patrol Operation Bureau and the Administrative Investigations Division, a Central District Station Administrative lieutenant, a Community Policing lieutenant, Law Enforcement Field Training Section commander, Patrol Shift commander, Property Crimes lieutenant, Special Operations lieutenant, captain of the North District Station, and Major of the Support and Health Services Bureau. He has served on the Honor Guard and the Corrections Response Team, and spent four years on the Major Accident Investigation Team as an Assistant Team Leader.

He has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from St. Petersburg College. Colonel Gerretz is a graduate of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Senior Leadership Program Class 18 and currently serves as the president of the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute.
