MAIT Investigates Vehicle Versus Bicycle Crash in Dunedin (25-129)

DUNEDIN – Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are investigating a vehicle versus bicycle crash in Dunedin.

According to investigators, on October 22, 2025, at approximately 7:16 a.m., 15-year-old Viktor Rakaj was riding his bicycle heading north on New York Avenue approaching Main Street. A 2024 Hyundai Elantra, driven by 16-year-old Michael Rodriguez, was traveling east on Main Street. Investigators say Rakaj failed to stop at the stop sign at New York Avenue and Main Street and traveled into Rodriguez’s path, resulting in Rakaj being struck by the vehicle.

Rakaj was not wearing a helmet and was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Rodriguez was uninjured and was cooperative with deputies. Rakaj and Rodriguez are students at Dunedin High School.

Impairment and speed do not appear to be factors in this case.

The investigation continues.
