Detectives Investigate Apparent Inmate Suicide At The Pinellas County Jail (25-076)

PINELLAS COUNTY – Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating the death of 38-year-old inmate Derrick Diestelmeier.
Diestelmeier was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on June 27, 2025, after being arrested by the St. Petersburg Police Department for fugitive warrants out of Oklahoma for Failure to Appear Receiving Stolen Property and Failure to Appear Domestic Assault. He also had local charges for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Providing a False Name to Law enforcement.
According to detectives, on June 30, 2025, at around 8:24 a.m., Diestelmeier was found unresponsive in the shower with a portion of his bed sheet wrapped around his neck which was secured to metal piping inside of the shower. Detention staff, along with medical personnel, performed life-saving measures.
Diestelmeier was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased on July 6, 2025 at approximately 2:31p.m.
Next of kin has been notified.
The investigation continues.
