DUNEDIN- At approximately 3:03 p.m., deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the Publix at 1491 Main Street in Dunedin to investigate a vehicle versus pedestrian crash.

 

According to investigators, 71-year-old Mary Canfield was driving through the Publix parking lot when she observed traffic in front of her. Canfield put her vehicle in reverse to allow another vehicle to exit the lane. As Canfield was backing up, she struck 83-year-old Carol Spezzano, who was pushing her shopping cart through the crosswalk. Spezzano was thrown to the ground and struck her head on the pavement.

 

Spezzano was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

 

According to investigators, speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash.

 

Next of kin has been notified. 

 

The investigation continues.
