PINELLAS COUNTY – Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating the death of 58-year-old inmate Tony Smith.

Detectives say Smith was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on April 1, 2022, after being arrested for Trespassing and Possession of Oxycodone.

According to detectives, on November 13, 2022, shortly before 1:30 a.m., Smith was found unresponsive in his cell by deputies who were conducting a well-being check. Deputies and medical staff performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Smith until paramedics responded to continue life-saving measures. Smith was pronounced deceased at 1:31 a.m.

During the course of the investigation, detectives found no evidence to believe Smith had been in any physical altercations or suffered any injuries while incarcerated.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will work to determine the cause and manner of death.

Smith’s next of kin has been notified.

The investigation continues.
