22-049 Detectives Investigate Inmate Death; Does Not Appear to be Suspicious in Nature

Charges: Felony Petit Theft, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of  a Controlled Substance

PINELLAS COUNTY – Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating the death of 54-year-old inmate Theresa Tooni.

Detectives say Tooni was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on May 20, 2022, after being arrested by the Largo Police Department for felony petit theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

Detectives learned Tooni was transported to a local hospital for medical reasons on May 23, 2022. Tooni was pronounced deceased at the hospital the same day at approximately 4:00 p.m.

At this point in the investigation, detectives have found no evidence that Tooni was in any physical altercations or suffered any injuries while incarcerated.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will work to determine the cause and manner of death.

Tooni’s next of kin has been notified.

The investigation continues.
