The crash occurred at about 9:03 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2020.

Where:
The crash occurred at the intersection of Gulf to Bay Boulevard and Hampton Road in Clearwater.

Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are investigating a deputy involved, vehicle verses bicycle crash in Clearwater.

Investigators say Deputy Toro, who was on-duty and operating his fully marked 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe, was traveling westbound on Gulf to Bay Boulevard and responding to assist another deputy on a traffic stop.

According to investigators, as Deputy Toro approached the green light at Hampton Road, a bicyclist being operated by 62-year-old Steven Greninger crossed Gulf to Bay Boulevard from south to north and into the path of Deputy Toro. Deputy Toro attempted to swerve to avoid the bicyclist but struck the rear tire of the bicycle.

Greninger was not wearing a helmet and sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries. Greninger was transported to Bayfront Health St Petersburg for treatment.

Deputy Toro was not injured and refused medical treatment on scene.

The investigation continues.
