Applicant Guidelines

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office requires applicants to be:

  • Minimum 18 years of age for civilian positions
  • Minimum 19 years of age for Detention Deputy
  • Minimum 21 years of age for Law Enforcement Deputy
  • Free of tobacco products for a period of six months prior to application and through the length of their career
  • Free of illegal drugs for a period of 12 months prior to submitting an application for employment and throughout their employment
  • Awarded an accredited high school or GED diploma
  • A citizen of the United States for Detention and Law Enforcement Deputy
  • Authorized to work in the United States for civilian positions

Detention & Corrections and Law Enforcement Deputy Certification Information

  • If you are currently certified in detention and corrections or law enforcement in another state and wish to become a deputy certified in the state of Florida, you may contact the Florida Criminal Justice Standards & Training Commission (CJSTC) at 850-410-8600 or www.fdle.state.fl.us for further information on equivalency training at one of the state’s law enforcement training centers.
  • If you wish to attend the law enforcement training center in Pinellas County, you can contact the Police Applicant Screening Service (PASS) at 727-864-3822 or www.policestandards.org for further information. Either CJSTC or PASS will be able to evaluate your background and previous training to determine what is needed for you to become Florida-certified.

PCSO EOT Reimbursement Program

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will reimburse out-of-state law enforcement and corrections officers in need of the Equivalency of Training (EOT) program up to $1,500 upon successful completion of the EOT program and new hire process. EOT new hires must be hired within one year of passing the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) State Officer Certification Exam to qualify for the $1,500 EOT reimbursement.

In addition, candidates may still be eligible for all other PCSO new hire deputy incentives: experience pay, signing bonus, and relocation stipend.


FDLE EOT Process

The EOT process is for out-of-state officers and federal officers who may be exempt from having to complete the full basic recruit academy upon relocating to Florida.

Out-of-state officers may be eligible for an exemption from the basic training requirements if the officer in another state or with the federal government meet the following requirements:

  • Worked at least one year, full-time as a sworn officer in the discipline seeking exemption
  • Received training in that discipline which is comparable to Florida's full basic recruit curriculum, or previously completed Florida’s full basic recruit training program and is certified in Florida.
  • Have no more than an eight-year break in service since latest separation from a sworn position.

Florida Statutes Section 295.07 provides for Veterans Preference for eligible veterans and family members in employment appointment, retention, reinstatement, reemployment, and promotion. Please note that preference will not be awarded retroactively.
