Welcome to the Sheriff's Leadership Institute

Heather Presti
SHERIFF’S LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (SLI) > 5 CORE FUNCTIONS

Developing our personnel and providing leadership training is very important and will become increasingly vital as we lose people due to natural attrition and engage in succession planning. Over the past several years we have had several Supervisory Development courses (basic, advanced, etc.) and while those classes have provided members with necessary skills, more is needed.

In 2020 the Sheriff decided to form the Sheriff’s Leadership Institute (SLI) to develop and implement robust training and resources. The SLI is part of the PCSO Human Resources Bureau. There are five key components of the SLI and they include:

  • Leadership Development
  • Career Development & Mentoring
  • Performance & Evaluations Training
  • Promotional Process Training
  • Resiliency & Wellness Program
SLI officially rolled-out in January 2021 and the first priority was to implement the Leadership Development component, which is comprised of four levels of training that build upon each other as a member advances (see attached: Leader Development Flow Chart). SLI’s Leadership Development program will enable agency members to:

  • achieve their full leadership potential and professional growth
  • prepare members for advancement
  • develop the leadership pipeline of the agency by developing leadership competencies in members

The goal of the entire program is to provide best practices to develop current and future leaders.
