Effective 04/23/2025
Pursuant to HB 341 enacted by the 2024 Florida Legislature, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) is implementing a new optional designation on motor vehicle registrations—referred to as the SAFE designation. This designation allows applicants to voluntarily indicate on their registration(s) that they are, or are the parent or legal guardian of a child or ward who is, a person with special needs, including developmental disabilities or mental illnesses. The purpose of the SAFE designation is to promote communication awareness during interactions with law enforcement or first responders in emergency or crisis situations. The SAFE designation will be visible only to authorized law enforcement agencies and will appear on the registration detail screen. The SAFE designation is available to agencies/users who have been granted the role of “View Developmental Disability and/or Deaf or Hard of Hearing” in the DAVID system.
