Good Morning,
On and after November 1, 2023, when a customer is issued an original, renewal or replacement driver license or identification card (DL/ID), the number will be updated as a one-time name change with a new format. DL/ID credential numbers will no longer be generated by a Soundex algorithm. The new number will consist of the following elements: 1. Character 1: The customer’s last name initial 2. Characters 2-11: 10-digit unique customer number (randomly generated) 3. Characters 12-13: 2-digit birth year DL/Card numbers will continue to be comprised of 13 characters. Existing card holders will not be impacted until a transaction to renew or replace occurs. HSMV systems will continue to relate the new DL/ID number with any previously assigned number, much like what is currently done when a customer’s last name changes. Once a new number has been issued, it will not be changed again unless the customer’s last name or date of birth changes. Additional communication will be provided. You can refer to the statutory change here: https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2022/322.14 and https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2022/322.051. Please let us know if you have any questions.
